Batch neutralization system (BNS)

Automated industrial effluent neutralization system

The BNS (Batch Neutralization System) developed by Actini Group has been specifically designed to automatically adjust the pH of effluents before discharge.

Initially developed for the treatment of effluents generated by batch effluent decontamination systems, it can also handle wastewater from other industrial processes, cleaning operations, or intermittent discharges thanks to its modular design and multiple configuration options.

The BNS ensures accurate and reliable neutralization of each effluent batch while helping facilities comply with applicable environmental and regulatory discharge requirements.

Technology

The BNS is based on a fully automated batch neutralization technology designed to treat defined volumes of effluent before discharge.

Each treatment cycle is performed in a dedicated tank where the effluent is homogenized and neutralized through controlled acid or caustic soda injection. Automated process control ensures precise pH adjustment and treatment validation before discharge.

This approach provides highly accurate neutralization while offering excellent flexibility for facilities operating in batch or campaign mode.

Standard features

  • pH adjustment function
  • Fully automatic neutralization system
  • Polyethylene (PE) tanks
  • Pumping skid with high-flow centrifugal pump
  • Automated process control
  • Modular design

Operating principle

The effluent to be treated is collected in a neutralization tank where it is continuously mixed to ensure complete homogenization.

Automatic injection of caustic soda and acid neutralizes the effluent pH. Adjustment is controlled by a pH probe installed in the recirculation loop, which regulates the dosing pumps.

The mixing pump provides continuous agitation at a flow rate exceeding five times the tank volume per hour, ensuring optimal dilution and homogeneous mixing of injected chemical solutions.

The tank volume is sized to maintain an approximately 30-minute contact time, allowing complete chemical reaction without residual reaction after pH verification.

Once treatment is completed:

  • a high-flow pump empties the tank;
  • the pH is measured before discharge;
  • if the pH is compliant, the effluent is discharged;
  • if the pH remains outside the specified range, the effluent is automatically returned to the tank for a new neutralization cycle.

Why choose the BNS?

The BNS is particularly suitable for facilities generating discontinuous effluent volumes that require precise pH control before discharge.

Its modular design, automated operation, and wide range of options enable easy integration into pharmaceutical, biotechnology, industrial, and research facilities.

FAQ – Frequently asked questions about the BNS batch neutralization system

What is a batch neutralization system?

A batch neutralization system treats a defined volume of effluent in a dedicated tank before discharge. The pH is automatically adjusted through chemical dosing until the required compliance range is achieved.

What types of effluents can the BNS treat?

The BNS is designed to neutralize effluents from batch decontamination systems but can also process wastewater from industrial processes, cleaning operations, and intermittent discharges requiring pH adjustment before release.

What is the capacity of the BNS system?

The BNS range covers neutralization capacities from 1,000 to 16,000 liters per day through four available models: BNS-300, BNS-750, BNS-1600, and BNS-2200.

Can the BNS be connected to a biological effluent decontamination system?

Yes. The BNS was specifically designed to neutralize effluents generated by batch decontamination systems and can be integrated into a complete biological effluent treatment process.

What are the benefits of an automatic neutralization system?

An automatic neutralization system ensures accurate pH adjustment, reduces manual intervention, and helps secure wastewater compliance before discharge.

How do I select the right BNS model?

Model selection mainly depends on the daily effluent volume, the physicochemical characteristics of the wastewater, and facility operating requirements. Actini teams support customers in selecting the most suitable system.

How is pH controlled during treatment?

A pH probe installed in the recirculation loop continuously monitors the effluent and automatically controls acid and caustic soda dosing pumps to achieve the target pH.

Can the BNS be customized?

Yes. Options include a second neutralization tank for redundancy, a plate cooling heat exchanger for effluents above 60°C, a dedicated electrical cabinet with HMI, and dedicated chemical solution tanks.

What is the difference between batch and continuous neutralization?

Batch neutralization treats effluents in successive batches within a dedicated tank, while continuous neutralization adjusts pH continuously on a flowing wastewater stream. The choice depends mainly on treatment volume and operating mode.
